How do I Back up my SERVE data?

Occasionally I get a call from someone who has lost all their data because their hard disk has crashed, or maybe they had a virus. Unfortunately problems do happen, even though this is rare. When it does happen the effects can be devastating. We therefore strongly recommend that you regularly back up your data

SERVE keeps all the information (foods, person details, food intakes, recipes, activity details, RDIs etc) in one database. This provides a number of benefits, namely that all the data is easy to find, and you only have one file to worry about when backing up your data.

However, the database is larger than will fit onto a diskette even if compressed. The answer is to use the PKZIP utility to back up the database onto your diskettes with the -& option. This will automatically request additional disks if required. You need to execute this command in DOS as follows: In the serve directory type in the following on one line, then press the enter key:

PKZIP A:SERVE.ZIP SERVE.MDB -&
